Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease caused by the infection of periodontopathic bacteriae.  It clinically shows alveolar bone resorption, abscess formation, tooth mobility, and finally tooth loss.  To determine the pathogenesis and to develop the prevention and treatment of periodontitis, it is important to establish animal models of periodontitis.  In this section, I show the effect of several bone-related drugs (bisphosphonate, statin, PTH, and prostaglandin E2) on the recovery of alveolar bone loss which is induced in experimental periodontitis in rats and hamsters.
